Almost every individual is talking about 5G. After 1st generation to 4th generation, 5G is now being launched in many countries. It can connect people things, machines, systems, and devices. 5G technology promises a great user experience by having some noticeable features like security, reliability, delivering & receiving higher peaks of data speed, highly reliable, ultra-low latency, the huge capacity of the network, and increased availability. America and Europe are leading with the implementation of 5G. Bhutan, Argentina, Malaysia, Mauritius, and many others have launched this technology. Recently Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi also launched 5G services on October 1st, 2022. Smart Farming is now being implemented in many Indian states like Kerala and Haryana. Farmers are trying to understand the technology in agriculture, and many inquiries from farmers have also been recorded in the last few months. Smart Farming has a few major building blocks: Sensors, Automation, DAQ (Data Acquisition), and a strong network to implement it. Take a very basic example: “You need to Water the field” - This message will be sent on the farmer's mobile. A farmer will complete the task just by clicking a button. In the given task the crop field will be having a sensor that will detect the water content in the soil. > > > Once the water level goes down, the sensor will then send this data for processing on a 5G cloud base. The data will be processed, and the message will be sent to the Farmer’s mobile. If the farmer opts to water the plant just with a click on his mobile app, this command will be sent back to the cloud. Through the cloud, the command will be sent to a smart Water sprinkler, and Field will be watered.

This was just a basic example of one of the applications, the spectrum is wide, and a lot of automation can and will be performed in the sector of agriculture. Such a similar application was displayed at India Mobile Conference. A collaborative initiative of Airtel and L&T SmartWorld and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC)-backed AgroW Smart is working on an increase in the production and good yield by using smart sensors driven by 5G in agricultural fields. These sensors in the system will collect data on crop and soil conditions. This data will be sent to a 5G-based cloud and suggestions will be given by the system for optimal options for farming. Due to such practices, sufficient water will be provided into the fields in suitable time slots in the day. This will reduce the wastage of water and electricity. Performance and price are inversely proportional to each other in most cases. So, a guess at the initial stage is that this system will be costly but 5G technology will surely initiate a lot of automation and technological procedures in agricultural fields.
